Molecular sieving of linear and branched C6 alkanes by tannin-derived carbons

چکیده

Two micro-mesoporous carbons (MMCs): a disordered mesoporous carbon (DMC) and an ordered (OMC), synthesized by easy, low-cost, green method are proposed as efficient hydrocarbon sieves for the separation of C6 isomers: n-hexane (nHEX), 2-methylpenthane (2 MP) 2,2-dimethylbutane (22DMB). Their textural characterization reveals highly interconnected pore network within DMC, while reverse hierarchy mesopores only accessible through narrow micropores is found in OMC. The texture strongly affects their adsorption performance kinetic molecular sieving effects; constrictions OMC allow nHEX partially 2 MP but not 22DMB, whereas connected DMC allows three isomers. Multi-component isotherms calculated from single-component experimental results ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) demonstrates that material has remarkably high selectivity + binary ternary mixtures, respectively. To best authors’ knowledge, such behavior never been reported so far materials. Hence, this study shows tannin-derived MMCs have great potential to be used eco-friendly low-cost alternative selective di-branched

Kinetics of adsorption of pure and mixtures of linear and branched C6 alkanes onto silicalite by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics

The separation of saturated branched and linear alkanes may be investigated by selective adsorption on microporous organophilic MFI type zeolite. From the literature, adsorption equilibria of mixtures show a favourable selectivity for less branched alkanes [1]. However the separation process is significantly influenced by the transport properties. The knowledge of the transport coefficients of ...

Quantum Molecular Sieving in Carbons

Introduction The molecular sieving of isotopes has long been considered impossible, as they are of essentially identical size and shape. However, for light isotopes such as H2 and D2, quantum effects can lead to sufficiently large differences in de Broglie wavelengths at cryogenic conditions to make their molecular sieving possible in nanoporous materials having pores of molecular dimension. Wh...

Sieving di-branched from mono-branched and linear alkanes using ZIF-8: experimental proof and theoretical explanation.

We study the adsorption equilibrium isotherms and differential heats of adsorption of hexane isomers on the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8. The studies are carried out at 373 K using a manometric set-up combined with a micro-calorimeter. We see that the Langmuir model describes well the isotherms for all four isomers (n-hexane, 2-methylpentane, 2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3-dimethylbutane). ...

Squeeze-out of branched alkanes on graphite.

We study squalane and heptamethylnonane (HMN) confined between a conducting atomic force microscope tip and a graphite surface. Solvation layering occurs for both liquids but marked differences in the squeeze out mechanics are observed for ordered or disordered monolayers. The squalane monolayer at 25 degrees C is an ordered solid, as verified by direct imaging, and the squeeze out can be model...

Structure and solvation forces in confined films: Linear and branched alkanes

Equilibrium structures, solvation forces, and conformational dynamics of thin confined films of n-hexadecane and squalane are investigated using a new grand canonical ensemble molecular dynamics method for simulations of confined liquids. The method combines constant pressure simulations with a computational cell containing solid surfaces and both bulk and confined liquid regions in equilibrium...
